The Sigma Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was chartered as Davidson's first sorority on November 23, 2008. The sisters of Sigma Psi support KIPP Charlotte, domestic violence awareness, and initiatives for Emerging Young Leaders, global poverty, health, and social justice and human rights.

The ladies of Sigma Psi have been awarded many Patterson Court honors, including in 2010 the Women's Organization of the Year and the Community Service Program of the Year. They also received the Barbara W. Davis Undergraduate Community Involvement Award at the 57th Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was founded at Howard University on January 15, 1908. The organization's colors are salmon pink and apple green, and they are represented by the ivy leaf and pearls, and the pink tea rose. Their motto is "By culture and by merit."

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of service to all mankind.
